Kevin's Log - October 31, 2001

I just want to update a bit.
The arenas are looking awesome, there are new particle effect tools to be used that were talked about for a long time that Rob got on this past week or so that make a lot more useful type of effects available to us.
Talking today has proved there are a few more we would like to have so Rob is going to get those in place in a week or so as well.
The great thing about particles is that they are super useful for a myriad of different effects. Even things people would not think, would be particle effects are still driven by the particle system instead of meshes because it is easier sometimes to use the pre-built spawner and renderer types to do things that would otherwise take a lot of tweaking and hand building if done through regular meshes.
Edgar has gotten more optimizations done on the engine core to speed things up so we will be testing the first implementations of the optimizations for the next couple of days to check stability. Once all is well there he will continue on and really hammer down some things before the beta test.
I can’t wait for the beta to begin, I am very excited to see what other people can do after a few days of playing the game.
Ok truth is I can’t wait to exercise my 15 months of play experience on some poor saps who have only had it a few days and just own all over them and show them the moves they will learn in time. Hehehehe. Evil has its advantages.
It should be a real blast. I am very optimistic about how fun it is going to be to play over the net too. It will be different than our net tests since our own net tests run from one machine in the building to another machine in the building that is connected to a different ISP. Of course there is going to be lag and of course there are going to be instances of packet loss and so on, there is no net multi-player game in existence without those things, but from the way it all stands now it should not be out of step with games like Q3 or UT.
Also there are some really cool sound set-ups in the game. It tells you when you did a good combo and things like that. It sounds really cool. Josh is doing a great job on sound effects, the ‘bots are sounding very heavy.
I am very optimistic about the extra arena or arena’s that I am working on at home.
At the rate I am going I should be able to do two extra arenas that would be ready for the initial release of the game. That way as soon as the release is done I can work on some straight up expansion arenas to release as bonuses later.
Of course once the release is selling we will be shifting towards the sequel to BG.
To loose some info for you guys we have been talking for some time about full-on robot upgrades that can be used on the net and allowing people to take upgrades away from destroyed opponents while in net games so that you can win upgrades by doing destructions against your enemies and basically steal the gear they fought hard to win in single player and other multi-player matches. Talk about a cool feature for pissing someone off hehehe.
Well chew on that stuff for a while and I will keep working. Later,
~K~
